The new National Opera and Theatre addresses the need for a purpose-built, large-sized performance venue, housing the Kosovo Philharmonic and providing proper new spaces for the Opera of Kosovo and for the Ballet of Kosovo, all currently based in Pristhina. The new cultural facility is meant to accommodate a wide range of different indoor and outdoor performances, lectures, events, conferences, and some of the many festivals periodically organized in town, starting from the DAM Festival.
The buildings shape recalls the traditional Kulla typology vertical articulation: a base, a massive textured body and a crowning entailing openings with views towards surrounding landscape. The three buildings façade are differentiated by a specific changing façade pattern and colour: light concrete elements, slightly iridescent, generate façade patterns aiming to reinterpret traditional fabric, jewellery, ceramic, wedding makeups as well as ancient stone walls mortar patterns.
Hanging gardens, external circulation paths, transparencies showcasing selected inner parts of the facilities, huge glazing providing natural light for rehearsal rooms, workshop areas, together with proper lighting effects, generate vibrant, live and unique building façades.
